TAROT WORKS ITS MAGIC

Through Tarot, your life is told in proper perspective-epic and cosmic. Tarot has an uncanny way of speaking directly and wisely to your unique situation.

Sometimes you will be offered a specific hope or warning, but usually you will receive good advice about creating your own best future.

Tarot sends you away with courage, insight, and flexibility.

A Brief History of Tarot

Tarot's origins have been attributed to ancient China, Korea, Iran, Egypt, India, and Central America, even to the lost civilization of Atlantis.

The oldest surviving individual cards may be 17 hand-painted artworks commissioned by Charles VI of France in 1392. The oldest remaining deck was painted between 1428 and 1450 in Italy for the Visconti-Sforza family.

Other decks simply decomposed with use or were tossed into religious bonfires of vanities, along with thousands of other inveigling luxuries.

Despite efforts to stamp out Tarot, its popularity spread throughout Europe. Early decks had as many as 140 cards, and illustrations included such characters as Old Man Time, Misery, the Fugitive, and Princesses.

Four Moors preceded the Popes and Emperors. Since instructions were lacking and illiteracy was widespread, each region had its own rules.

Gradually, Tarot became less of an entertainment and more a matter of prophecy, aided by French noblewomen who took up fortune-telling to validate gossip and exert influence in royal courts. A letter in 1589 fingered Tarot as an occult device.

But in the late 1700s, Tarot went completely psychic. From then on, its powers became a topic of study among clerics, astronomers, and magicians.

Learned men wrote theses and joined secret societies, such as the Golden Dawn, because of Tarot.

THE CARDS

The 78 cards in a Tarot deck are of three types. The 22 cards of the Major Arcana (Big Secrets) represent the soul's journey through 21 universally transformational experiences.

The Fool, a member of the Arcana, is assigned a zero; he is a traveler who may appear anywhere.

Give these 22 cards the most weight in a reading because they are the key to karmic mysteries, twists of fate, and major life events.

The 56 remaining cards are called the Minor Arcana (Little Secrets). They represent ordinary daily experiences.

No one Minor Arcana card is as powerful as a single card from the Major Arcana, but collectively, when several cards with the same numeral or of the same suit fall in one spread, they may pack a punch.

Forty of the Minor Arcana cards are numbered.

All four Suits-Cups, Rods (or Wands, Staves, or Staffs), Swords, and Pentacles-have cards numbered One (Ace) through Ten.

They represent the consecutive stages of development (birth to maturity) of the qualities associated with each suit.

The remaining 16 Minor Arcana cards are the Court cards. They represent real people in the querent's (questioner's) life, or personality traits of the querent.

Simultaneously, they exhibit the most mature aspects of their respective suits.

✔ Pages, considered lucky, are children or messages.

✔ Knights are teens, young men, or men who act young, and often indicate travel.

✔ Queens usually symbolize older women, nurturing, and development.

✔ Kings are authority figures and rule with a style that suits their mood.

THE PROCESS

Finding a Deck

Your Tarot deck picks you.

In some traditions, it is believed that your first deck should be a gift, but it's perfectly acceptable to surrender to one that catches your eye.

In 1909, Arthur E. Waite and Pamela Colman Smith created the prototype for the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck, a favorite with many. Its articulate imagery jogs beginners' memories while inducing a soothsaying mood among seasoned practitioners.

Card decks are diverse: traditional, religious, ethnic, goddess-inspired, cat-themed, gay, erotic, fine art-themed, and digital, to name a few.

Some people design their own decks. Aleister Crowley, Walt Disney, Salvador Dali, and Roland Berrill (co-founder of MENSA) did. With a little help from a crafty friend, you could too.

Prepare Your Cards

There are differing opinions as to how to properly "bond" with your deck.

If ritual helps you get in the right mood, sleep with them under your pillow, and wash your hands with lavender before each use.

Charge them under the full moon. Or keep them together in one drawer.

The cards are just that-card stock. The magic is inside you and the imagery. Do sprinkle your cards with powder-it keeps them unstuck.

Do use the same deck again and again until it becomes familiar in your hand. And, it is good practice to either keep your cards wrapped in a length of silk or stored in a special pouch.

After some use, you may find your cards becoming "sticky," especially if you are doing readings for others.

Your subjects' energy may transfer to your cards, and you will need to cleanse them periodically to refresh their energy.

There are several methods for restoring energy balance in your cards. Once popular, smoke purification with white sage is not recommended, as the plant is a protected species. However, juniper, cedar, and mugwort are all suitable substitutes.

You may even have mugwort growing in your backyard. Certain crystals, such as selenite, may also be used to purify your deck.

Store the crystals with your deck, whether you wrapped them in silk or kept them alongside them in a pouch.

You may also immerse your deck in salt (put the deck in a sealed container before placing it in salt) for a week or for however long you feel is necessary to remove "stuck" energies.

Laying Out the Cards

There are many practices regarding shuffling the card deck. Some let the querent shuffle the cards, while others prefer not to let their querents touch them.

Whichever you prefer, shuffle, cut, and turn the cards any way you like, while your querent considers his or her question. The deck must be thoroughly mixed and feel ready (you'll know when it's time).

Some readers have their querents cut the deck in three parts, using their left hands. Then the reader reassembles the deck. When it feels right, pull cards from the top of the stack and place them in the spread.

One Card Pulls

If you draw only one card, don't whiz through explanatory text for a fast answer. Study the card mindfully. Notice colors, symbols, and facial expressions.

Does the figure remind you of anyone? If there is more than one figure on the card, which one is the querent? If something puzzles you, research it. It's the best way to study your deck.

Getting Started

Intention

You don't need a Ph.D. to read the cards, although the more astrology, numerology, symbolism, and mythology you know, the better your card-reading vocabulary.

But the cards evoke universally held knowledge. And you have more intuition than you think. Don't rely completely on interpretations you find in books or online.

Pay attention to your own reactions to each card. Listening with empathy is your most important skill. Most people already know the answers.

Your job is to help them ask the right questions. Encourage queries that start with "what," "how," "why," and "what if." "Will I find a lover?" won't reap an answer as nearly as rich as "What can I do to meet someone?"

Be playful and positive when you read. It is probably no accident that the magic of Tarot sprang from a game of amusement.

Synchronicity cannot be forced, and subtle wisdom will be lost in an atmosphere of admonishment, fear, or resistance. Make it your intention to use the cards for good.

Oracle Decks

Now that you're on your way to mastering cartomancy (fortune-telling through the use of playing cards), you may consider Oracle decks. A major difference between Tarot and Oracle decks is structure.

While Tarot decks vary wildly in theme and style, they usually incorporate a version of the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. Oracle decks are much more flexible and can contain any number of cards.

Each usually consists of an image combined with words of wisdom, and the decks include a guide to deeper meanings behind the cards. Because of this, Oracle decks may be less intimidating for novice readers.

There are decks based on animals, crystals, plants, faeries, dragons, moon cycles, angels, and other themes, so it's easy to find one that speaks to you.

You can start with a reading of a single card for the day, or use a multi-card spread.

For more insight into a situation, you can combine a Tarot reading with an Oracle reading-pull a card before or after your Tarot spread.
